The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
