European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
